Postcard from Denmark no. 3

A postcard, sent on 24 April 2009, showing several views of the picturesque port of Vejle in central Denmark (pop. 50,000) with the white windmill, the symbol of the town. The single 8 DKK stamp was issued on 25 March 2009, in the EUROPA 2009 astronomy series. It shows an interesting minimalistic representation of the Tycho Brahe Planetarium in Copenhagen (1989). The other stamp in the series shows the Round Tower (1642), another famous Danish observatory built on the initiative of Christian IV. Thank you, Natália!

Postcard from Denmark no. 2

A great postcard, sent on 22 March 2009, showing a night view of Copenhagen (Nyhavn) with a stamp showing another night view, in another, possibly imaginary, city.

The large 8.25 DKK stamp was issued on 6 June 2007 along with another stamp presenting the contemporary Danish art. The painting called Trionfale (2007) is by Finnish-born artist Seppo Mattinen (1930-), who moved from Denmark to Italy where he got inspired by the local Via Trionfale to create this atmospheric piece of art. I just love this stamp.

Postcard from Denmark

Today (21 November 2008) I received another mail from Denmark, this time a postcard showing a sunset over the harbour of the city of Aalborg in the north of the country. Aalborg is the fourth largest Danish city with a population of about 120,000. The postmark is not legible, so I cannot say how long this card travelled to me.

And I find here another great stamp! It was issued on 29 March 2006 as one of the two Danish stamps in the Norden series of Nordic Mythology 2. It features a nice set of mythic beasts: two mares (at the top), a ghost horse in the middle, a goblin and a troll next to it, and two werewolves at the bottom. The stamp looks a bit crazy in its colouring, but is charming in its own way. Thank you N.!

Letter from Denmark

I love surprises and like the feeling of discovering what the postwoman brought me in the great lottery of unexpected mail. Today (20 November 2008) I found in the mail-box this letter from Denmark (stamped 18/11/2008 - superfast Scandinavian delivery). Leaving aside the Christmas postal labels, I became mesmerised by this weird photo by Krass Clement on a stamp issued on 27 August 2008, in a Danish photo-art series. I didn't know this Danish photographer, but this picture of his is a winner for me. As the Photography Encyclopedia says, "his work is close to the street and the decisive moment, melancholic, voyeuristic, nocturnal, and confrontational." I find echoes of the German expressionism there, Kafka and David Lynch, things which resonate in me. And then there is the person opening the door...
