Cover from the USA no. 9

Recently, I've talked a bit about classic cars so here's another nice cover with them...this time from the US, with two of the five stamps commemorating the classic cars of the 1950s as part of the Americans on the Move series. Depicted here are 1957 Lincoln Premiere and 1959 Cadillac Eldorado. The letter was sent from Oakland, CA.

A very nice cover received last year from Illinois, USA featuring two 44c stamps of the Cowboys of the Silver Screen series issued on 17 April 2010. The film stars here are Gene Autry and Williams S. Hart... plus a 10c definitive. Thank you so much, Bob!

Postcard from Slovakia no. 7

Here's a postcard we sent ourselves from a visit to the town of Medzilaborce (pop. approx. 6,600) in northeastern Slovakia, one of its most remote and undiscovered regions. Medzilaborce is now famous for its museum of Andy Warhol whose parents came from the vicinity of the town. There is also a Jewish cemetery and a large white Orthodox Church.

The stamp from 2008 shows a portrait of Slovak poetess Masa Halamova. The T1 100g denomination has been used in the period when Slovakia was leaving its koruna and accepting euro. Now almost all of the new stamps bear only euro denomination.

The 1 koruna definitives are from 1993, part of the long series showing the coats of arms of Slovak towns.

And talking of Andy Warhol I found in my collection of postcards this night skyline view of Corpus Christi in Texas, with the Andy Warhol stamp from 2002, along with a sad-looking dog on a neuter spay stamp from the same year, what a crazy combination of looks...

A cover with more stamps from the fantastic series of Flags of Our Nations. This time, taken from the set no. 3, issued on 6 August 2009. The flags belong to the states of Massachusetts and Maryland. The cover was sent from New Jersey, but unfortunately the machine cancellation is not very legible.

Cover no. 5 from the USA

A nice cover received this September from Sarah, handcancelled in Lansing, Michigan, with two stamps taken from a souvenir sheet of ten stamps showing inhabitants of kelp forests off the central California coast, issued on 1 October 2009. More can be seen also here. The rest of the postage is covered by a Grand Teton National Park airmail definitive from 2009.

The Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis was built in 1888 and is here presented in a nice aerial photo. The Kansas flag on the 42c stamps was issued as part of the 2nd Series of the Flags of Our Nation on 2 September 2008, and the "Pansies in a Basket" stamp was issued in the "Love" series on 22 April 2010. A postcard showing the Big Cypress Swamp in the Everglades National Park in southern Florida, one of the US UNESCO World Heritage Sites, consisting of subtropical wetlands designated as one of only three wetland areas of global importance.

The two first class (44c) stamps are taken from a set of ten stamps with homeless pets photographed for a project called Animal Rescue issued on 30 April 2010. Another one is here.

Another great card from Dulcey from New Hampshire, USA, postmarked on 11 May 2010 at Manchester, NH, showing the capitol building in Augusta, Maine.

I am also very happy to have received another flag from the great US series Flags of Our Nation, this time Nevada from the 4th set issued on 16 April 2010. The other first class (44c) stamp is taken from a set of ten stamps with homeless pets photographed for a project called Animal Rescue aimed to raise awareness of the need to adopt shelter pets, issued on 30 April 2010. The rest of the postage has been covered by the American clock definitive (2003). Thank you, Dulcey!

Postcard from Austin, Texas, USA

A postcard received via postcrossing.com from Mickey in Austin, TX, sent on 21 April 2010, showing a view of the Frost Bank Tower from the Town Lake in the centre of Austin. And there are three nice stamps, two of them recent 2010 commemoratives. The large 44c stamp shows the painting by Mark Rothko (1903 - 1970) called Orange and Yellow (1956), issued on 11 March 2010 in a series of ten stamps dedicated to abstract expressionists of the 20th century; the picture is not my cup of tea, to be honest, but it certainly broadens the horizons. The second stamp was issued on 22 January 2010 for the occasion of the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver (print run 45 million). The postage is complemented by a definitive showing Aerican Clock (2003).

Postcard from New Hampshire, USA

Received a couple of days ago, a postcard showing the state capitol in Concord, New Hampshire. The card was sent from Manchester, NH, on 16 November 2009, and reached me in more than 14 days, which is, apparently, the usual time of delivery of ordinary mail from the US at the moment (judging also from other items I have recently received from Indiana and New Jersey).

The are two colourful self-adhesive stamps of 44c taken from a souvenir sheet of ten stamps dedicated to the kelp forest off the central California coast. This educational sheet was issued on 1 October 2009. The rest of the postage is made up by a 10c American clock definitive. Thank you, Dulcey!

Cover from USA no. 4

Received last week from Columbia, South Carolina. Two self-adhesive commemorative stamps from a series of 4 issued on 9/9/09, dedicated to the Thanksgiving Day parades, including a lively marching band, large balloons of favorite animals and popular characters, and crowds of delighted onlookers. The rest of the 98 cent postage is covered by a 10c definitive from 2003. Thank you, Amanda!

Cover from the USA no. 3

An interesting cover from Plano, Texas, sent on 21 March 2009 and received 6 days later. Apart from the Lunar New Year stamp, which I commented upon in an earlier post, it bears a nice photographic stamp with a dogsled (commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Alaska statehood, issued on 3 January 2009) and a 10c stamp issued on 17 June 1975 in a series celebrating the US Bicentennial (part of the painting "the Battle of Bunker Hill" by John Trumbull). Postcard from Florida, USA

Here is a flamingo postcard from Florida, sent on 7 February 2008 and received 19 days later, special by its insufficient postage. The sender put on only a 41 cent stamp of the domestic rate... and the card safely reached me even across the ocean. An American postman marked the card as "short paid" with the T68/75 and "postage due" notices, however, no one here asked me for anything.

The stamp is a self-adhesive flower issued in 2007, along with 7 other stamps.

Postcard of Maine, USA

There is a definite tranquil charm emanating from this summer morning postcard of Muscongus Bay, Round Point, Maine...

It was sent on 29 January 2009 from Manchester, New Hampshire, and bears three stamps makingup the postage 94 cents for Europe - this year's Lunar Year stamp with an image of an ox (issued on 3 January 2009, as a second installment in a series started last year), and another 42c stamp in the Love series, this one issued on 16 June 2008, the third stamp shows an American clock from 2003.

Postcard from Oklahoma, USA

A new postcard from the USA, from the state of Oklahoma showing its War Memorial Park in Muskogee, home of the USS Batfish. It was sent from Tulsa, OK, on 20 January 2009 and reached me in 8 days. It bears two interesting commemorative stamps, both issued in 2009. The 200th anniversary of the birth of E. A. Poe is remembered by the stamp issued on 16/1/2009, and the sesquicentennial of Oregon’s statehood by the stamp issued on 14/1/2009. The rest of the postage is covered by the American clock from the current definitive series.

Flags of Our Nation cover from the US

Three US state flags on this letter sent on 15 December 2008 from Wisconsin. On 16 June 2008 the USPS issued the first 10 self-adhesive stamps in a projected series of 60 pieces (2 ten-stamp sets each year through 2010). The flags on this cover belong to Alabama, Arizona and Alaska. A real treat for us collectors of geography-related stamps:-) Thank you Candy!
