Cover from Belarus no. 5

A nice two-stamp cover with the coats of arms of the towns of Kamyanyets (issued in 2005 in a series of 3) and Vitebsk (issued in 2008 also in a series of 3) sent from Hrodna in 2010. The total facial value of the stamps is 950 Belarus ruble, which is 0.085 euro or 2 Czech crowns = ten times cheaper than sending a letter the other way round...

Postcard from Belarus

A great postcard received from Belarus, postmarked in Grodno, showing an aerial view of the historic town of Volkovysk (Vaŭkavysk) in western Belarus, pop. 48,000.

The matching stamp, issued on 2 September 2005 in 72,000 copies, commemorated the 1000th anniversary of its founding, since the first mention of Volkovysk in the Turov Annals is in 1005. At that time Volkovysk was city-fortress on the border of the Baltic and the Slavic ethnic groups. The wolf in the coat of arms reflects the name of the town in Russian "Volko-vysk", the place where wolves howl.

Cover from Belarus no. 4

A new letter received today from Raman in Belarus, with the complete set of two stamps in the EUROPA project from 2004 when "Vacation" was the theme (stamps were issued on 4 May 2004, with a print-run of 120,000). I find them very pretty. One shows a man who is mushrooming, the other a man gone fishing, both presumably favourite pastimes in Belarus (and here in the Czech Republic too - mushrooming is one of the top summer activities for majority of the locals:-). The pictorial envelope from 2008 agitates against smoking with a slogan "Young ecologists against smoking". Thank you!

Cover sent from Minsk, Belarus, on 21 October 2009. The envelope is in fact a piece of postal stationery issued by Belpost in 2009 with a pre-printed stamp of "A" rate (currently 260 rubles), for sending light letters within Belarus. The 600 ruble stamp showing turtle Emys orbicularis was issued on 12 March 2003 in a series called "Reptiles of Belarus", the 30 ruble definitive is petunia from the 12th set of Belarusian definitives (27/5/2008). Interestingly, the total postage amounts to 890 rubles, which is 0.21 euro or 5.65 Czech crowns, i.e. 3 times cheaper than sending a letter of the same size the other way.

Cover from Belarus no. 2

A letter sent on 22 January 2009 from Minsk, Belarus and received 4 days later. The topics of the two definitive stamps are Garden Flowers and Animals of Belarus. The 500 ruble Lilium hybrida stamp was issued on 30 May 2008, the photo self-adhesive squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) stamp is from 12 June 2007 (print-run 3,000,000). A rate (240 rubles) covers the postage for sending a letter within Belarus. Thank you, Tanya, for both!

Nice cover from Minsk, Belarus - sent on 10 December 2088 and received on 15 December 2008. It features a nicely designed stamp dedicated to weaving (issued on 21/12/2007, in 42,000 copies, series of handicrafts) and two small definitives from the 9th Definitive Series presenting Birds of the Garden (2006) with Ficedula hypoleuca - Pied flycatcher (30 ruble) and Carduelis cannabina - Linnet (50 ruble), both with a print-run of 1,050,000.
