Postcard from Poland no. 2

This is an impressive postcard received in January 2011 from Warsaw, showing the Palace of Culture and Science (Palac Kultury i Nauky) against a dramatic sunset.

The 3-zloty stamp was a bit of mystery to me. Before checking the Polish Post website, I tried to guess what it is related to... and had no idea... koi, a drop of water, and a blue stamp frame?? Well, the answer is... the stamp is taken out of a souvenir sheet which mentions the context on the border... The World Philatelic Exposition in Luoyang, China, held on 10-16 April 2009, and now it's obvious, my dear Watson:)

(An aside, in Polish I read that the stamp was issued on 16 "kwietnia" and I thought, ok, it's May - květen in Czech - but far from it! 16 kwietna is 16 April - duben in Czech... our languages are similar, but this is a truly false friend:)

Postcard from Poland

A nice postcard received yesterday from Szczecin (Štětín in Czech) in northwestern Poland, the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, with a view of the breathtaking castle of the Pomeranian Dukes who ruled the Duchy of Pomerania from 1121 to 1637. The 2.40 zloty Christmas stamp was issued on 27 November 2010 together with another stamp for local use. Yes, Christmas time is coming:)

Cover from Poland no. 2

When spending a day in the south-east of Poland last week I sent myself from the town of Krosno this letter with two recent Polish commemorative stamps of 1.45 Polish zloty. The left stamp is dedicated to the 1950s-1960s TV comedy show called Kabaret Starszych Panow, and was issued on 30 October 2008 in 450,000 copies, the other stamp was issued on 4 January 2009 (print-run of 640,000) and commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille. There is a label attached with a text in the Braille script. The third definitive stamp is from 2001, from a series dedicated to Polish manors.

Polish cover from Ilawa

Received on 23 October 2008, after 6 days' travel from northern Poland, is this cover with the definitive stamp of the "spiritual capital of Poland" Czestochowa. The stamp was issued on 24 April 2006. Since it rained here on Thursday, the letter got a bit wet near the bottow edge. My thanks go to S.
