Cover from India no. 2

A cover from India received yesterday from Thana, Maharashtra, with the definitives from the current series called "Builders of Modern India": Indira Gandhi (1917 - 1984), issued on 1 December 2008, and Mother Teresa (1910 - 1997), issued on 1 March 2009. Thank you, Niraj.

Cover from India

My first cover from India, sent registered on 26 February 2009 from Mangalore. It reached me in 11 days. The Czech Post attached its own registered label on the front.

I find the stamp very special, as it is another scented stamp in my collection, after the Brazilian burnt wood this sheet with the elephant wood-engraving smells of sandalwood, and it is a very pleasant aroma. The sheet was issued on 13 December 2006.

Postcard from India no. 4

Another UNESCO postcard from India, sent by Abhishek from New Delhi, received on 3 February 2009. Thank you!

It shows the tomb of Salim Chisti in Fatehpur Sikri, the state of Uttar Pradesh. A masterpiece of Muslim architecture, the city is unique in India as a nearly intact Mughal city.

The large beautiful Rs.5 stamp was issued on 2 May 2007 along with 5 others is a series dedicated to 2550 years of mahaparinirvana of the Buddha (the final nirvana attained at death of the physical body). About the Rs.10 tiger stamp I wrote here.

Postcard from India no. 3

This postcard from India is of an earlier date. I received it on 5 November 2007 from Hampankatta, Mangalore in the state of Karnataka (zip 575001). It show a statue of a dancer in the Chennekesawa Temple in Belur (Karnataka).

The Rs. 5/- stamp was issued on 2 October 2007 as part of a series dedicated to the centenary of Satyagraha (non-violent resistance), developed by Mahatma Gandhi. The Rs. 3/- definitive is part of the already mentioned VIII Definitive Series of the Indian post (2000) and shows a smooth Indian otter. Thank you, Praveen!

Postcard from India no. 2

On 30 December 2008 I received another nice Indian postcard sent from New Delhi (on 23/12/2008). It shows the world's largest camel fair held in the holy town of Pushkar, in the state of Rajasthan.

The stamp is part of the VIII Definitive Series of the Indian post from 2000, already mentioned in my previous post about the postcard showing the Red Fort in New Delhi. The Rs.15/- Tawny Coaster Butterfly was issued on 20 November 2000.

Postcard from India

Yesterday, on 16 December 2008, I received this nice postcard of the famous Red Fort, located in the walled city of Delhi, India. It was constructed by the Emperor Shah Jahan in 1638 A.D., the art work in the fort being a synthesis of Persian, European and Indian art.

The two stamps used on the card are part of a series of attractive definitives issued on 30 April 2000 as the VIII Definitive Series of the Indian post. The Rs.10 depicts the tiger in the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve, and the Rs.5 stamp a leopard cat, "a member of the cat family of the same size of the domestic cat, but having the colour and markings of a miniature panther"; the other stamps in the series being Black Buck (25p), Nilgiri Tahr (50p), Sarus Crane (Re.1/-), Kurinji Flower (Rs.2/-, Smooth Indian Otter (Rs.3/-), Tawny Coaster Butterfly (Rs.15/-) Amaltaas (Rs.20/-) and Pardise Fly Catcher (Rs.50/-).
